In Greek the word “theatron” means “place of seeing”. This word eventually morphed into what we know as “theatre”. The theatre is a subset of the performing arts and is defined as one or more human beings being isolated in time or space presenting themselves to others. Given its broad definition it is clear that humans have been in the practice of story telling for hundreds perhaps thousands of years. There have been many variations of the theatre; most likely the first play was an ad hoc performance, unintended by its performers. The average play has various elements such as music, speech, gesture and dance. While other cultures embrace fiction in their performance arts western society tends to focus on reality and includes elements of true events in their stories. Modern theatre has become an evolved art that is honed and perfected into the ultimate performance experience. The Utah theatre is the place to discover the performance arts and enjoy an entertainment experience that doesn’t involve staring at a box. |
